Lantern Review of Frost Valley

The camp community has no shortage of great traditions or testimonials of lives changed. The many catchy slogans of America’s best camps are both accurate and prescient. What might be a bit different about Frost Valley is the sincere and carefully crafted values-driven program. The results of their program, built over a few decades, have been boiled down to core values which are now used to re-imagine, create, implement and deliver a true values-oriented camp.

Set among the pines and hemlock of the Catskill Preserve, the camp’s scenic property straddles a lake and river, with a historic feel among the stone and timber buildings and platform tents. Modern additions to the facility have kept pace with the needs of their diverse camper population. Frost Valley believes strongly in the power of camp, and thus believes strongly in “camp for all.” This mentality lends an obvious vitality to their camp community.

The activities available at Frost Valley are wide-ranging. Several different session options demonstrate that Frost Valley doesn’t adhere to a one-size-fits-all program. Instead, it hopes to provide an option that best suits each child, delivered through the lens of its over-arching value system.

Typically campers have a choice of four daily activities, two in the morning and two in the afternoon, which they travel to with their counselors. In addition, all campers will spend at least one night in a tent camping nearby, and many will participate in broader trip options like rafting. This design helps reinforce the core values of community, diversity, inclusiveness and stewardship. Frost Valley’s focus on character development is obvious, and the clear mission of the camp helps to set it apart as a wonderful and intentional camp program.
