Lantern Review of Camp Olympia

The Big Thicket region of Texas may be just a short jaunt from bustling Houston, but it feels a world away. The meandering creeks and green spaces are home to one of Texas’ finest camp traditions, Camp Olympia. Set lakeside and carved into the pines and oaks of a wilderness preserve, Olympia has created a wonderful retreat from the fast-paced city life of Houston, Dallas, Austin and other cities further afield around the US and even worldwide.

The modern facilities stand almost in contrast to the spirit of Olympia’s core values that in many ways reflect simpler times. Olympia values respect, kindness, responsibility and dedication with a warm and supportive Texas embrace, delivered through a relatively structured camp program. Speaking to the camp director, Tommy Ferguson, gives you the clear notion that he believes in the potential of every child who comes here. He’s a straight-shooter, and has a warm, patient personality that’s typical in this neck of the woods. Hard work and responsibility are key elements to finding success and joy in life, and Olympia is determined to help guide campers through the opportunities and challenges of each day.

Prior to camp, campers and their families are asked to rank their activity preferences. With more than forty activity choices, it’s easy for each camper to participate in their favorite activities while having the opportunity to explore new sports or programs. While the daily program supports the larger goals of camp, it’s the cabin culture that reveals many of Olympia’s strengths. Carefully screened counselors are trained to connect personally with at least three campers, getting to know those kids “as though they were their own.” This tangible goal helps the counselors stay focused on the real opportunity to be positive role-models for the girls and boys here, while helping to ensure that no camper slips through the cracks. It’s personal and it works!

Camp Olympia’s program shines both on the fields and in the cabins, perhaps due to the on-going devotion to long-held values. While much changes in the wider world, the idea that personal connection and individual responsibility predicts success and joy remains constant. Camp Olympia is a spirited, happy testament to the power of both.
