Lantern Review of Camp Lonehollow

Just driving into Camp Lonehollow gives you a sense that something different and special is happening here. Nestled into the scenic, rugged landscape of Texas Hill Country, Lonehollow finds itself set among the many storied camps that this vacationland is known for. Lonehollow seems different, though. For instance, the traditional camper cabin has been re-imagined here; grain silos have been innovatively and creatively re-purposed as the campers’ charming summer homes with pillow-top mattresses and granite showers.

Lonehollow is one of the new kids on the block among the camps in this part of Texas. Its heritage, however, reflects the longtime camp experience of its founder Meg Clark, who has spent decades in camp. Her restless spirit for something new and innovative, however, inspired her to create a new kind of traditional sleepaway camp. The vast array of camp activities and the elective schedule of six daily activity periods honor a more traditional camp model, but implementing a more intentional approach to developing the “full child” demonstrates an embrace of emerging child development research.

Within this camp community, a theme of “Ages and Stages” guides the counselors and forms the framework for the camper experience. There are distinct program stages, Pathfinders for the youngest campers, Scouts for the middle-schoolers, and Adventurers for the oldest campers. This format recognizes that each age group has its own challenges and that they each have different developmental needs as children. The result is a very thoughtful, engaged program that promotes progression.

Lonehollow keeps its eye on the horizon, recognizing that at some point, their campers and staff will grow beyond the camp experience. One example is the regular meetings with their counselors which not only focus on training to be better counselors, but also provide support for learning skills for job interviews or management. In developing their camp program and staff training, Lonehollow has carefully plotted a course for the campers to thrive and feel valued. The result is a highly intentional and enthusiastic camp. Yes, the facilities are first-rate, but in the end, it’s the happiness, loyalty and growth of the campers that makes Lonehollow a standout.

Director's Message

“Having fun is at the heart of everything we do,” said Clark. “But the real essence of our program lies in our ‘Ages and Stages’ curriculum – nurturing young campers to grow their independence and self-reliance, helping middle-schoolers build self-esteem and social skills, and guiding the oldest to become strong role models. In addition to fun, we want campers to grow into strong, responsible leaders, make lifelong friendships, and ultimately get geared for life while here.”
