Lantern Review of Island Lake Camp
If variety is the spice of life, then Sports and Arts Center at Island Lake (also referred to as Island Lake Camp) may be the proof of that fact. Like many camps, the number of activities that are available for campers is remarkable. What’s different at Island Lake is the huge variety of choices; from more traditional camp activities like sailing, to team sports like basketball, and even as far afield as circus, magic or skate park. If you’re looking for variety, look no further than Island Lake.
The rural countryside of Pennsylvania is a lovely setting for a camp. Island Lake sits astride two lakes which play host to their water sports. The modern facilities are certainly high-end and suited to providing quality programming, and a perfect complement to the nurturing, well-trained staff.
The program is broken into three “majors” and three “minors” daily. The intention with this design is to allow campers to focus on skill development and mastery in the instructional “majors,” while having the opportunity for more recreational, fun activities as their “minors.” The Morning News at breakfast keeps campers up-to-date with the entire camp community, announcing upcoming tournaments and trips, along with other news that highlights camper achievements or some activity options. At the same time, activities that are available to choose that day as “minors” are presented, so campers truly have a daily choice within the program structure.
Island Lake Camp was founded by the Stoltz family in 1986. Now, the second generation of the family has been passed the reins. In speaking with the directors, a pride and joy in this family’s camp is obvious, as is their genuine desire to reach out to each camper. Within the camp program and cabin culture, there’s an almost light-hearted approach which is wonderfully disarming, and likely at the root of their ability to help kids emerge from camp happier and more fulfilled.
