Lantern Review of Lake Owego Camp
When you drive into Camp Lake Owego past the striking lodge and impressive climbing wall, you’re left with a memorable first impression. Take a quick walk around, and your first impression will be validated; this is a wonderful camp for boys.
Lake Owego strikes a welcome balance in speaking to a boy’s inherent spirit of adventure and his need to belong to a supportive brotherhood. Within Lake Owego’s program, there is an intentional outlet for the competitive nature that many boys often share, but it’s grounded by an attentive counseling staff who help the campers keep any competition in perspective. League play with nearby camps is more about building camaraderie and spirit than it is about winning. It is also balanced by a range of less sporty activities like outdoor cooking and rocketry, and an opportunity for true adventure on a three-day canoe trip for older campers.
The boys at Lake Owego choose most of their six daily activities. For the younger campers, four are chosen by the each camper every day, while the older campers make their choices for those four elective activities prior to camp. The boys participate with their bunk group in the other two activities, helping to reinforce the cabin group dynamic.
You have a sense that Lake Owego prides itself on being unpretentious. The campers want to excel, but not at all costs, and not without enjoying their time. Camp is supposed to be fun, after all, and Lake Owego inspires the boys to discover the daily joys that happen at camp. There’s a subtle message of encouragement at this camp to “leave your image at the door.” In an era where boys and girls feel so much pressure to maintain a certain image at school or on the playing field, this little encouragement is a pressure release valve. Beyond that sign, Lake Owego hopes to develop each camper’s true identity, and given their impressive return rate north of 90%, it’s clear that they’re succeeding.
