Lantern Review of Pali Adventures

There might be some in traditional camp circles who wouldn’t be too quick to embrace Pali Adventures as one of their own. From where we’re sitting, however, this camp is a shining example of a child-centered camp program design. In that way, it might just represent a welcome alternative to other camp programs.

At Pali Adventures, it is the full range of the camp experience that takes center stage. The program is high energy, light-hearted and engaging. You’d be hard-pressed to find a down time in this camp; there’s an urgency among the staff here to make sure all of the campers are continually engaged and happy. For Pali, it’s about letting your guard down, releasing the pressure of the school year and simply having a blast.

In the mornings, campers participate in their specialty activity which they have previously chosen to focus on. While the eclectic mix of specialty programs are often non-traditional (witness Spy Camp or Hollywood Stunt Camp), within each program you’ll find many of the traditional sleepaway camp favorites (like archery) that help form each program. In other words, these program specialties are often the sum of many separate activity parts. It’s an interesting format that keeps the campers engaged by immersing them in their interests.

In the morning, the campers choose afternoon activity electives. In this way, the camper completely controls his or her afternoon’s options. Meanwhile, the camp staff monitors and evaluates these daily choices to help guide the program. This allows Pali’s program to be uniquely responsive to the desires of the campers.

When walking around Pali, the always-blue skies are a reminder that you’re in southern California. And keep an eye on those grinning campers nearby since there’s sure to be a water balloon headed your way. If it’s fun that you’re after, you’re going to find it at Pali.
