Lantern Review of KenMont and KenWood Camps

The Berkshire Mountains are a popular outdoor getaway for New Englanders hoping to get back to nature. It’s no wonder that so many camps call this part of the world home. Among them is the stand-out KenMont and KenWood Camps, a brother-sister camp at the foothills of the Berkshires.

The girls of KenWood and the boys of KenMont are wrapped into the decades-long traditions here begun in 1924. The straw hats for the girls, which are filled with feathers as they accomplish new skills or demonstrate character, and the KenMont brotherhood bands, which symbolizes their bond to current, past and future campers, resonate strongly with the campers who genuinely embrace them. Like many meaningful camp traditions around the US, they are an effective tool to promote positive choices and skill development.

There are six activity periods each day offered through a choice program. Waterfront activities are certainly a popular option here, but an array of choices send campers from the ropes adventure course to go-karts to sports to cooking classes. The focus at KenMont and KenWood is firmly on high level skill instruction. It’s not enough to simply try new things; the directors truly want the campers to learn the skills to succeed. By doing so, the campers develop competence which leads to confidence. This is accomplished by their dedicated effort to hire specialists for each activity. Beyond the activity front, it’s the relationships that are paramount. Counselors are well-trained to help foster friendships both during the activities and in the cabin.

The boys and girls spend the vast majority of the time immersed in their own camp’s program. In this way, it has the feel of an all-boys or all-girls program, yet a few weekly get-togethers between the two camps create a fun esprit-de-corps among the girls and boys. And while the high-level instruction might imply a high-powered sports program, the activities are delivered with an almost low-key approach. What results is a more relaxed atmosphere. Just ask any visitor to the place who may be spontaneously serenaded by the girls as they tour the camp’s facilities.
