Lantern Review of Camp Laurel

Try to remember that time during your childhood when you took a family vacation and then thought how great it might be to take an amazing vacation with your friends instead of your parents. Camp Laurel is your chance to provide that incredible escape for your child. Yes it’s an escape, but this experience will have that profound impact we all hope to provide for our kids. An experience that promotes discovery, builds confidence through skills and creates enduring friendships.

Camp Laurel hosts nearly 500 campers each summer, and focuses on reaching each individual camper. Part of this is a result of the camp structure; three main campuses for each of the boys and girls areas, broken into smaller communities that are age-specific. Counselors are well-trained for and dedicated to reaching out to each child individually. What is even more impressive is how well connected the Laurel staff are to each camp family, a direct reflection of a remarkable return rate north of 92% and a long legacy of alumni campers.

The stunning camp grounds and the high quality of the facilities and equipment reflect the belief in delivering a world-class program. Professionals, coaches and specialists are hired to lead the six core areas of athletics, waterfront, adventure, tennis, inter-arts and equestrian. Among these, it’s hard not to notice the high-level at which the Laurel campers participate and can compete in activities like tennis, basketball, waterskiing, lacrosse and horseback riding. The team sports encourage participation, yet can help further develop expertise from top-flight instructors.

Regardless of skill level, however, campers thrive here. The staff’s dedication and enthusiasm for a camper’s success is a direct reflection of the sincere desires of Jem and Debbie Sollinger, the directors, who are ever-present in the cabins and the activities. It’s no wonder that Camp Laurel continues to be recognized among America’s elite camp programs.
