Lantern Review of Camp Lake Hubert
Not long after its brother camp opened in 1909, Camp Lake Hubert was founded to welcome girls from around the US for a traditional sleepaway camp program. Years later, Lake Hubert continues with a steadfast adherence to its traditions and a balanced program formed around five core principles. These values, the caring staff and the well-structured program guide girls through a process of discovery that builds self-esteem and social competence.
Set above the lovely shoreline of its namesake lake, the Lake Hubert waterfront is a lively spot. Even so, there is a thoughtful balance in program designed to bring a broad experience to the campers. The camp embraces the traditional camp format as an enduring and relevant tool to build character. The horseback riding and sailing programs are stand-outs among their wide-range of options. The staff encourages each girl to discover her unique identity, find success with that identity and help identify those traits that improve her character. This is an empowering process that leads to a real joy at camp. The songs and chatter that echo from the dining hall are obvious signs of this happy place.
Multiple generations of alumni are scattered throughout the US and the world, forming the basis of the vast Lake Hubert geographic spread and cultural diversity. With such diversity, Lake Hubert is adept at helping campers discover the common values shared among the camp community. This has a profound and lasting impact. The program format and the cabin’s chalet design form an important framework to affect this discovery. While elevating self-discovery, community-building remains an important goal.
The winding, lakeside paths among the cabins and activities are a lovely setting within this northwoods environment and Lake Hubert continues a long, colorful history of traditional camping. Be sure to check out its big brother, Camp Lincoln, for the boys in your family.
