Lantern Review of Birch Trail Camp for Girls
Hidden down an unmarked drive among 500 acres of pristine wilderness, Birch Trail Camp for Girls provides a retreat from the many pressures, academic and social, that make up much of the school year. The lakeside setting transforms each summer from a serene retreat to a lively, joyous home for almost 200 girls from around the US and the world. Its diverse camp community reflects a dedicated effort to limit the number of the girls from any one community to a small percentage of the larger camp family. This approach helps prevent cliques within the cabins and affords the girls a better chance to form friendships across many backgrounds.
The program strikes an attractive balance between in-camp activities and adventure adventures like hiking, sailing, and wilderness canoe trips. Each girl indicates her interests prior to coming to camp and finds those activities available to her on arrival. In addition, she selects other activities throughout the session through a “prime time” period, providing each girl freedom to pursue new interests. The program offerings are wide and varied, which Birch Trail staffs through the careful pre-camp program selection. This lets Birch Trail teach to a high standard, setting up a system that helps girls find success and build self-esteem.
The wilderness tripping program provides wonderful opportunities to face new challenges and build even deeper friendships. All girls spend time camping in the wilderness, and many opt for larger trips of up to 2 weeks. Birch Trail's tripping program provides a structure within which the girls can find success, as well as their own voice, within their cabin.
There’s an inviting “mom and pop” feeling to Birch Trail Camp, ensuring a family atmosphere in this home-away-from-home. The “mom and pop" nature of the camp is all the more remarkable because of intentional program within it. Indeed, the program is carefully designed and evaluated annually. By training and encouraging counselors to become mentors, teachers, and role-models, the campers find a fun and supportive summer home. Most all return year after year.
