Lantern Review of Camp Ocean Pines

There’s something almost dreamy about this place. Maybe it’s the morning fog that shrouds the Monterey pines and coastal oaks, or the gentle drone of the Pacific surf in the distance, or maybe it’s the people who seem so connected here. To step into Camp Ocean Pines is to step out of the hectic, often sterile world around us. Maybe this place is an escape, but more importantly it’s a place for connection where campers leave better prepared for what’s beyond the summer camp months.

For Ocean Pines, the importance of social development can’t be overstated. In their estimation, kids are not missing more opportunities for more structured activities; what they are missing is the opportunity for unstructured social interaction. With this in mind, they have crafted a program where the social piece takes center stage, not in a rah-rah, contrived enthusiastic way, but in a genuine, grounded way. Time to “hang out” has become an art here. Take a look up the hill at the hammock village; it’s not just a place, it’s an integral and popular program. A collection of hammocks hang around a small area where campers and counselors simply talk and connect. This kind of activity demonstrates an intentional program centered on face-to-face interaction fostered by carefully selected and trained staff.

With that said, it isn’t all just hanging out. There are plenty of novel activities to keep the campers active and engaged. Two activities in the morning and two in the afternoon are selected the night before. True to their striking outdoor setting, a daily trip to the ocean is always available to explore this beautiful part of the world. For Ocean Pines, the key to connecting with each other and to self-discovery might just lie in the ability to connect with your surroundings.

Camp Ocean Pines is a welcoming, open summer home, and they revel in the wide variety of personalities who come here. There’s warmth of spirit that allows campers to feel safe enough to become who they want to be.
