Lantern Review of Camp Farwell

If longevity is a hallmark of quality camping, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a camp with a longer run than Camp Farwell. Proudly known as the oldest girls camp in the US, Farwell is an enduring message to the world on the value of camping.

True to its past, the Farwell programs offers a variety of traditional camp activities, but they have added a few unique specialty programs. Within the highly respected riding program, for instance, is the option for vaulting, a mix of gymnastics and horseback riding. The ability to offer more specialized instruction demonstrates a depth to the Farwell activities, particularly in their more popular activities like riding, theater and pottery.

Original log cabins still grace the camp that’s set alongside a secluded lake in the rural Vermont countryside. Modern comforts like in-cabin bathrooms have been added, consistent with other thoughtful improvements over the years. Perhaps one of the most revealing aspects of Farwell is found in the ‘JFY’ activity option, an acronym for “Just For You.” The directors and counselors hope that each girl leaves camp with a deeper understanding of herself, of who she is now and who she hopes to become. This is a place to grow in understanding of your own personality and the role you can have in a greater community. It is “just for you” here, but it’s balanced with a determination to help girls reveal their value among others by developing self-esteem.

There is a decidedly international flavor to Farwell. Most of the counselors come from overseas, hired for their skills and their desire to work with children. A relatively high number of campers also arrive from countries like England, France and Mexico. It’s hard to say if the founders of Farwell could have foreseen just how far their camp family would spread, but it is a wonderful indication of just how broad Farwell’s reputation has spread.

Director's Message

We are a family run business that has been operating Camp Farwell since 1978. We have a completely elective activity program which allows our campers to choose only the activities meaningful to them. They can build skill and confidence in favorite activities and have the freedom to challenge themselves with new programs and activities. Our main focus each summer is to build self-esteem, self-concept, leadership skills and empower our campers to be true to themselves. We are successful when our campers leave us with a greater sense of self and strengthened confidence back to their homes and communities.

Travel Information

Most parents drive their campers to camp. For campers coming abroad and from different parts of the country, they will fly into Boston Logan International Airport the day before the session begins. All of our sessions begin on Sunday, so all travel dates to camp are on Saturday. We have Camp Farwell Staff members meet the campers at the airport and then chaperone them on a bus up to camp. We also provide chaperoned transportation to the airport at the end of the session. Boston Logan Airport is the only airport we travel to and from.
