Lantern Review of Fernwood Cove

If a camp’s perfect setting should include a long view over a lake, Fernwood Cove certainly reflects that small piece of perfection. Wherever you are on this lovely camp, the lake is within view, and the open campus might well be a wonderful metaphor for the openness of their happy spirits here.

There’s a kindness to the campers and staff at Fernwood Cove, and while that may well be a reflection of the families who are attracted to this program, it’s also a direct reflection of the camp leadership who views their roles as a natural extension of parenthood. The staff return year after year because they feel valued, and that experienced staff creates a grounded, nurturing atmosphere.

In many ways, Fernwood Cove is driven by the activity program. Most all counselors have extensive backgrounds in at least one of the many camp activities, yet they are also bunk counselors. This format reflects the importance of all staff being prepared and trained to deliver top notch instruction, and to provide a nurturing hand during the camp day. The activities are broken into 7 key categories, and the campers elect their program once a week. As campers get older, they have more flexibility and responsibility in choosing their daily activities.

Also built into the program is a dedicated effort to help campers develop a love of nature. With the waterfalls, lakes, and wooded trails of Maine and New Hampshire just out their front door, Fernwood Cove has dedicated Thursdays for exploration out of camp.

Fernwood Cove’s classic white and green cabins hint to just how classic this camp program is. It balances an active program in a natural, outdoor setting, and provides the warm summer camp spirit that we’ve all come to love.
