Lantern Review of Teton Valley Ranch Camp

It’s a remarkable union here at Teton Valley Ranch Camp (TVRC); a place where the Old West has joined seamlessly to modern camping and hiking. The stark landscape of the high plains of Wyoming is dramatic, set on a high mountain forest surrounded by the spectacular and rugged Wyoming mountain ranges like the Tetons and Wind River. The campers of TVRC call this place home for four weeks, with boys attending the first session and girls the second.

The traditions of TVRC reach back to its founding in 1939, but what is special about the traditions is that they reflect the larger traditions of the pioneer West. It reveals the values of hard work, honesty, perseverance and a reverence for nature. From this philosophical basis, they have developed a program that’s challenging and grounded in the simple joys in the discovery of the West.

Most of the campers return to TVRC each summer seemingly by design. The program purposefully promotes a thoughtful progression towards skill and leadership development. The youngest campers at age eleven dip into the wonder of the environment through a wide range of activities and short hiking and riding trips. By age 16, the girls and boys return for more responsibility through leadership opportunities on trips or in activities, while further working to master skills. As TVRC says, by that age, “the mountains, caves, rivers and valleys are now your home, bringing untold freedom and responsibility.”

The activities reflect the environment and traditions. From fly fishing to a top-notch western riding program, riflery to ranching, it’s a wonderful balance that appeals to a broad range of campers. Even the creative bunch finds unique opportunities like lapidary. A careful program design helps the campers develop skills gradually. As an example, a stocked fly fishing pond allows novice fisherman to work on the skills, to catch fish and then move to more challenging nearby streams.

The log cabins sit among the aspen and hardwoods, a fitting home in a ranch style setting. The true experience, however, is outside those four walls and among the mountains of the adjacent national forest or even nearby Yellowstone. It’s big country out here and the experiences at Teton Valley Ranch Camp are somehow even bigger.
