Lantern Review of Camp Thunderbird for Boys Camp Thunderbird for Girls
You remember those stories of the two camps across the lake from each other, one for boys and one for girls? Well, it looks like you’ve found that story up here in northern Minnesota. Camp Thunderbird for Boys and Camp Thunderbird for Girls are two of the storied camps in this camp-rich part of the world, and they sit lakeside on scenic Lake Plantagenet.
Like so many successful camps, this is a legacy camp with the third generation of family now at the helm to usher along the long-held traditions through the 21st century. Camp Thunderbird’s boys and girls camps are completely separate, single-gender programs, but they benefit from a unified vision and history. Their programs are similar and centered on long-term favorites like sailing, climbing, riflery and other traditional camp activities. The campers choose their program daily, a dedicated effort to empower the boys and girls to develop independence. A typical day has four activities. A couple of times each week, cabin groups choose an activity to do as a cabin, such as tubing, playing team building games, or making old-fashioned ice cream. It’s an active day here that’s both challenging and supportive.
Thunderbird also embraces the adventure that’s inherent in wilderness camping. Overnights are typical for all age groups, and the opportunity to strike out to Canada or the Pacific Northwest for extended hiking, canoe or sail trips are an attractive option for older campers. Even with all the activity in and out of camp, Camp Thunderbird remains focused on the cabin group, and the social skills developed through the cabin dynamic.
The boys and girls walk the wooded paths at each of their respective camps, and yes they find time to get together for social events or some spirited competition. It’s helped form a loyal camp family among the campers and staff at Camp Thunderbird.
