Lantern Review of Camp Timberlane for Boys
Tucked into the pine and hardwood forests of Wisconsin lies the secluded Lake Towanda and home to the classic northwoods Camp Timberlane. The non-competitive but challenging program is a direct reflection of the long-time director Mike Cohen whose active summer is spent programmed into activities alongside the campers and staff, not shuffling papers in the camp office.
The program is a careful design that promotes balance in skill development, recreation and adventure. Nearly all of the campers choose from an array of wilderness trips, from rock climbing to sea kayaking, which can last up to twelve days among the nearby state and national parks. While in camp, boys choose their focus, but are equally encouraged by the counselors and through the activity structure to try new things. Sailing and mountain biking to rocketry and basketball demonstrate the wide-range of opportunities here. It gives campers an exposure to novel activities in which they can develop new skills, yet allows them to also keep up with any sports that they may participate in while at home and at school.
Beyond the courts or the camping trail, the counselors are measured by their ability to be impactful daily throughout the program. By creating an expectation of meaningful interaction throughout the day, both in activities and in the cabin, relationships become a focal point. It is these relationships that have led to a 90% return rate and fosters strong ties to the Timberlane alumni community.
Camp Timberlane strikes a wonderful balance in the camping world for boys, equally mixing a focused in-camp program with an exciting tripping program. The beauty is that the non-competitive format still grows a desire within each camper to find adventure, to develop skills and to grow relationships. At once, it seems laid-back, but intentional and completely balanced.
