Camp Timberlake

Black Mountain, North Carolina

Lantern Review of Camp Timberlake

Tucked among the hardwood forests that slope down from Mt. Mitchell in the North Carolina countryside is Timberlake Camp. Those long summer days when boys are naturally drawn to the outdoors to explore are part of the success of this family-run camp. Adventure is at the heart of the Timberlake experience. Beyond that basic formula lies a carefully crafted camp experience handed down from a family legacy that also built Timberlake’s sister camp, Merrimac Camp next door.

If adventure is what draws boys to Timberlake, it may well be the deep bonds of friendship that actual bring them back each summer. And they do return, chasing the next great adventure with the other guys in their cabins who, more often than not, become their closest friends. Shared challenge creates shared stories of success. It’s on the trips that explore the mountainside forests of North Carolina, or the rivers that traverse them, where the boys develop the camaraderie. Perhaps more importantly, it’s where they discover the confidence that leads to self-discovery.

The counselors at Timberlake are well equipped to help this process along. Each day finds a moment of reflection between the camper and his counselor. It’s powerful to be heard, and to hear a genuine assessment on what is truly unique and special about you. It’s an intentional approach that allows the camper to feel celebrated.

The in-camp program is an equally important part of the day here. Their activities are delivered with a clear framework that promotes progression. Developing expertise is valued here, which requires top-notch staff. They grow many of their own staff, and it shows in the continuity in an exciting daily program among an interesting mix of activities. Families choose their top eight activities prior to camp, and the campers then find themselves mixed in with different ages determined by skill level.

The camp’s campus supports their desire to be a tight-knit group. The Christian culture is an important foundation here, but it’s not exclusively Christian. Those traditions are key to creating this happy summer experience. The boys love it here, and it doesn’t take long to realize that when you walk into the dining hall. The boys are singing, laughing and connecting. It’s a vision of what camp was meant to be.
