Lantern Review of Camp Fernwood
There are places that you walk into that seem to transport you to another, more idealistic time. The people around you seem almost carefree, the surroundings seem carefully looked after and the atmosphere is decidedly warm and genuine. Welcome to Camp Fernwood.
Picture old New England, with the dark, pale shaker-single sided lodges, the old white pines circling open fields and a placid, shimmering lake; that is the vision of the environment here at Fernwood. It’s as though this camp has always been here, providing a comforting warmth that an old family cabin might. What unfolds each summer, however, is far more exciting and profound than a weekend retreat to the family cabin.
The camper cabins of ten to twelve girls are the vibrant heartbeat of Fernwood. The counselors and campers adopt the hallmark carefree lifestyle of Fernwood by intentionally unplugging from today’s fast, techno-world. It’s time to slow down, then to get moving to the beat of the active daily program.
Here the girls are constantly engaged, whether through the five daily activities chosen prior to arrival at camp, or the many day trips to nearby parks, or the multi-day trips that explore the Maine wilderness by backpack, whitewater canoe or mountain bike. Fernwood hopes to help each girl reconnect with the beautiful natural surroundings, and more importantly, use those surroundings to help them connect with each other. Friendships formed at Fernwood are remarkably tight.
The reputation of Fernwood is stellar, both among its loyal camp families and among the camp fraternity. Finding your way into one of the coveted spots can be a challenge with return rates north of 95%. Do so, however, and you’ll be astonished. The girl who went away to Fernwood for the summer will return a changed young woman.
