Lantern Review of Camp Agawak
For those beyond the Great Lakes area, Camp Agawak may escape notice. If it has yours, you've missed a gem. Set among majestic towering red and white pines on a beautiful, clear Wisconsin lake, its well-earned reputation as one of the finest Midwestern girls camps has been a created through longtime traditions, creative programming, specialized staff and a nurturing environment. An active daily program offering more than 40 activities gives way to special activities each Wednesday and Saturday. The daily program is customizable for each girl depending on her personal interests, and each activity period typically includes a mix of camper ages, helping reinforce the tight-knit family feel to this place. When you walk through the camp, the girls' spirit and smiles demonstrate the true sense of belonging they feel as part of the Agawak family.
Beyond the daily program, the girls at Agawak have a range of canoe and hiking trip choices that take advantage of their northwoods location. Even the youngest experience a night under the stars at Agawak’s 26-foot teepee on the camp property.
Evening special events, a weekly campfire, and the longtime Blue & White team tradition help create the special spirit here, and you get the sense that generations of families share a not-so-secret connection from their Blue or White team legacy. Yet, the new campers find the same connection to past generations in this tradition. It creates an esprit-de-corps and enlivens the special activities at camp. More importantly, it deepens the loyalty to the Agawak family.
The special events are part of what makes Camp Agawak so intriguing; it is a spirited testament to what is right with traditions. Agawak embraces its nearly century-old past through an energetic and unique program that reflects the passion of its hands-on owner and director Mary Fried.
There’s a fitting metaphor between the clarity of the lake and this lovely place. The girls leave Agawak a part of a meaningful sisterhood, finding new clarity in who they are and who they hope to become. Deepened by Agawak’s camping traditions and the lifelong friendships formed at camp, their sense of themselves matures and provides a foundation for personal growth.
