Lantern Review of Camp Birchwood for Girls

The northwoods of Minnesota lake country is fertile ground for summer camps and Camp Birchwood for Girls shines brightly as one of the stand-outs with a long family legacy. The happy, light-hearted spirit reflects a true joie-de-vivre embraced by the owners, the Bredemus family, and is supported through progressive staff training of their counselors.

It is a purposefully all-girl staff at Birchwood for Girls intended to empower and demonstrate to the campers an inner strength that is ready to be awakened in each of them. The counselors help the girls discover this inner strength and work hard to develop each camper’s unique voice within the chorus of the greater camp community.

Arriving at Birchwood for Girls, it’s difficult not to be struck by the charming stone and shaker shingle lodge, the massive and thrilling lakeside waterslide and the impressive range of vessels in its sailing fleet. Somehow these three facilities symbolize much of what one might hope to find in a camp; tradition, fun and expertise. A “challenge by choice” tripping program complements a full daily program offering a variety of activities designed to foster self-discovery.

There’s an almost tangible desire for friendships to develop here. Indeed, the counselors are trained to help campers develop skills that form friendships. Daily feedback from Terry and Rachel Bredemus, the camp’s directors, helps counselors maintain this focus. The result is this happy and light-hearted camp.

Camp Birchwood for Girls’ brother camp is Birchwood for Boys, another legacy of the Bredemus family and a stone’s throw from the Canadian border.
