Lantern Review of Camp Walt Whitman
Traveling the back roads of New England, you cross into fertile country for the many summer camps and family getaways that evoke a nostalgic longing for childhood memories. Here in the pine covered mountains of New Hampshire, Camp Walt Whitman has carved an enduring testament to family legacies, friendships, outdoor living and sportsmanship. It is a place that comes alive with 400 campers from around New England and both coasts attracted to both superb sports program like tennis and a desire for outdoor adventure through hiking, biking or canoe trips. It’s a wonderful balance that reveals the embedded philosophy of providing new experiences that build community through individual awareness.
A typical day finds campers heading to activities with their cabin group and counselors. This cabin-centered structure promotes a tight-knit cabin bond. As the cabin groups move among the nearly 60 activities, the opportunities for individual success are almost inevitable, eliminating social hierarchies within the group. Each camper will find an activity that will showcase his or her unique talents; an empowering moment that builds self-confidence and allows a deeper appreciation for others to emerge.
Beyond that, campers choose 2 elective activities daily, allowing each camper to pursue his or her passions or interests. The expertise of the staff in the many sports offered here allow for true skill development at almost all levels.
Now in its third generation of family direction, there is a continuity of philosophy and expertise that keeps Walt Whitman well-grounded. Yet, the tradition of innovation and intentional programming keeps Walt Whitman relevant to today’s discerning families. While the activities and trips are certainly a draw, it is the friendships and legacy of family loyalty that keeps campers returning at a nearly 90% rate. Look no further than the happy smiles among the cabins to see how meaningful these friendships become.
