Lantern Review of Kutshers Sports Academy

Much has been said about the value of sports in developing teamwork, self-confidence and sportsmanship; skills that most agree are vital for the success of our kids to navigate into adulthood. At Kutsher’s Sports Academy (KSA), these skills are front and center at an incredibly well-coached program for just about any sport imaginable. What separates KSA from the typical intense “sports camps” is an intentional balance with traditional sleepaway camp activities that lend the opportunity to maintain a perspective on the role of sports in one’s life. Sometimes, sports seem to consume every waking moment for the sports-oriented kid. What KSA does so well is to reacquaint the camper with the bigger picture through simple fun and a little adventure.

The recently renovated facilities are what you’d expect to find at a top-notch sports program, including an enormous new field house that boasts the original wood floor of Boston Garden. The picturesque setting of the Berkshire Mountains reminds you, however, that this is as much a traditional camp as it is a sports camp. The nearby Appalachian Trail provides for hiking escapes and the clear lake is buzzing with swimmers, boaters and waterskiers. Traditional “color wars” and regular campfires demonstrate an intentional blend of traditional camping with their sports expertise.

Professional-level, collegiate-level and high-school-level coaches anchor the sports instruction. An indication of the level of personal instruction is illustrated by a drop in the camper-to-staff ratio within the sports programs; opposite of what you find at many camps where the ratio tends to increase in the program and decrease in the cabins. Each week, campers choose four daily sports activities and two “free play” periods. Additionally, league-play on most evenings adds well-supervised competition for the campers.

For those who crave sports, regardless of ability, or for those traditional campers who are seeking a bit more dedicated sports instruction, KSA stands as an attractive alternative to the typical “sports camps” or “traditional camp”. While KSA certainly sees ‘sports’ as the best tool for teaching important values, they strike a balance by helping campers look beyond the playing field to discover their full potential.
