Lantern Review of WeHaKee Camp for Girls

The foundation of the WeHaKee experience is an emphasis on helping each girl build meaningful relationships. Perhaps nothing better illustrates the intentionality in forming a supportive, open community than the cabins that feature welcoming front porches and an open layout. Their cabins stand in contrast to the many dorm-like rows of bunks that can be found at so many camps. Bunks are arranged to allow an open, living-room-style space for hanging out or impromptu dance parties. It feels almost like home.

WeHaKee Camp for Girls celebrates a diverse population, both geographically and socio-economically. In this way, they hope to reveal the possibility of meaningful friendships among girls of all backgrounds. WeHaKee strives to reflect the diversity of the wider world to prepare the girls for what the real world will have to offer.

A broad spectrum of traditional and not-so-traditional activities keeps the girls active, motivated and engaged. In leading the activities, the well-trained counselors guide the girls in enhancing their positive relationship-building skills as they create friendships across the larger camp community. Prior to their arrival at camp, girls share their activity preferences to create their own unique program. This provides the campers an opportunity to build on what they already love and an opportunity for WeHaKee to encourage each of them to try new things as a way to discover hidden gifts and talents.

The park-like setting is nestled along a scenic Wisconsin lake and is exceptionally well-maintained to ensure that each camper will feel comfortable. The newly renovated cabins are welcoming and the recently improved shower and restroom centers enhance privacy and are professionally cleaned daily. A heated swimming pool sits alongside their waterfront on quiet Hunter Lake.

The camp directors, Maggie and Bob Braun, bring a combined 60 years of expertise to the WeHaKee tradition. Their warm personalities and extensive camping backgrounds help guide the staff to instill a true sense of belonging in the campers, creating a genuine love of this charming place.
