Lantern Review of Camp Chipinaw
The “10 for 2” rally cry for summer camp faithful demonstrates the desire of so many campers and counselors around the globe to do anything to get back to camp each summer; to live ten months of each year for the pure joy of two months at camp. Walking into Camp Chipinaw, you have to wonder if this camp wasn’t home to the original “10 for 2” movement. The campers and counselors at Chipinaw are a passionate, enthusiastic bunch who love their camp.
Much of this passion is fostered by the Chipinaw directors who continue to pour their energy and resources back into the camp program. They care for the kids, for their program and for their facility, which perpetuates a long-time culture of passion for being one of America’s finest camps.
With nearly 60 activities to choose from, the boys and girls at Chipinaw are exposed to a fascinating range of sports and unique activities like its circus program. The boys and girls have separate areas on the same campus and the camp is intentionally run almost as two separate camps; a boys camp and a girls camp each with their own bunk areas and dining halls. Even so, it is certainly a coed experience at Chipinaw with much of the daily life spent in and among each other throughout the day.
As the daily activity unfolds, campers travel to each program area by “division”, essentially a larger group of campers divided by age. The divisions then break into smaller groups of campers who have chosen the activities they want to participate in among two waterfront, two team sports and two elective activities. Each year that campers return, they are given more elective choices and thus the opportunity to spend time mastering skills in their favorite activities. The format is effective in encouraging campers to explore a wide-range of interests during the summer. For Chipinaw, it’s not necessarily about being the best, but instead it’s about fostering an environment to learn new skills.
Yes, some of Chipinaw’s strengths are their activities, the very accommodating kitchen that caters to kosher and other special dietary needs and their striking facilities, but the positive, enthusiastic culture is created in the bunks. It’s the friendships formed at Chipinaw that make the difference and which have the campers working hard for ten months to get back to camp for two.
By the way, Chipinaw’s ‘session camp’ is Silver Lake, offering shorter sessions right next door.
