Lantern Review of Camp Caribou for Boys
Camp Caribou is a camp that can’t sit still. The fast-paced program, the enthusiastic counselors and directors, and the exciting wilderness trips each point to the vibrant, active Caribou spirit that enlivens the entire camp community. This is not to say that there is no depth to the summer experience at Caribou; just the opposite, in fact. This energetic place is grounded by a nurturing camp mom and charismatic camp dad in Bill and Martha Lerman. The roots grow even deeper in realizing that the Caribou legacy is now entering its third generation of family ownership, as Bill and Martha’s children continue to build and innovate the camp program.
Set under towering white pines on a peninsula of a quiet Maine lake, this camp is a visual stunner. There’s true substance behind the beautiful veneer here, however. Nine tennis courts, groomed sports fields, a hockey rink and new field house demonstrate the commitment to high-quality sports instruction at any level. Being at the footsteps of so many natural wonders in the Maine wilderness, Caribou also encourages the boys to find fun on the trail through optional whitewater canoe and rafting trips and hiking trips of up to three days.
The campers are scheduled to fifteen morning activities each week. After lunch, a more personal and almost throwback approach to scheduling allows campers to sit with the program staff to create their own afternoon’s program. The approach is personal, individual and empowering, helping the Caribou staff to better know each camper while allowing each camper to develop his own priorities at camp.
While Caribou is proud of its ability to innovate to meet the needs of today’s camper, it’s equally proud of its heritage of character development anchored by high standards for personal behavior and for sportsmanship, nurtured by well-trained, friendly counselors. The campers at Caribou are a lively and loyal bunch who find an attentive staff eager to celebrate each camper’s accomplishments.
