Lantern Review of Camp Tall Timbers
Just outside the busy northeastern corridor of Pennsylvania, Washington DC, Virginia and Maryland, the wooded hills and valleys of West Virginia countryside seems like a step back to a slower, simpler life. It’s in this natural setting that you’ll discover Camp Tall Timbers, secluded in the pine and hardwoods alongside its private lake.
You feel welcome at Camp Tall Timbers, perhaps due to the personal approach that they insist on at this camp. The camp directors' and staff's refreshing honesty ensures clarity about what campers can expect from their new summer home and the wonderful skills they'll walk away with. They truly hope to partner with the entire family to understand each camper even before his or her arrival.
Of the many positive outcomes that are valued here is the progress towards independence, something of a legacy in this part of Appalachia. The program is structured so that most activities are chosen independently with the guidance of hands-on counselors. The program has an attractive balance in structure among team and individual sports, waterfront and outdoor adventure options, with facilities that allow the Tall Timbers staff to carry-out high-level instruction. Whitewater rafting and go-carting trips highlight some of the adventure day trips that break the daily routine with exciting and challenging activities.
Camp Tall Timbers truly values campers from all walks of life. Once under their care, real learning, both in skills and in values, is masked in the fun of the active program. Their Golden Feather award might best illustrate the priorities at Camp Tall Timbers. Campers earn Golden Feathers by demonstrating effort and enthusiasm and helpfulness. In other words, it’s about character, not just being the best or achieving the most.

My goal as an owner and director is to try and provide my campers and staff the same great experiences I had as a camper and counselor. From the fun things I was able to do, to the many cultures and experiences I was exposed to. From my counselor teaching me how to hold my fork correctly when eating to learning how to water ski. Now as the owner and director I am thrilled to see the campers of the past that have gone on to great success and honored by their sharing of Camp Tall Timbers impact on their lives today. I hope parents give us the privilege of having their most prized possessions join us for these great experiences.
