Lantern Review of Brown Ledge Camp

Nestled into a peninsula on Mallet’s Bay of historic Lake Champlain, Brown Ledge Camp’s picturesque setting is classic northern Vermont. The spirit of this camp also reflects the classic Vermont ‘way of being’ in which joyful relationships are celebrated, a can-do spirit finds like minds and the simple pleasures of the natural world are appreciated.

Many camps have implemented a ‘freedom of choice’ program for their campers over the years. What’s fascinating about Brown Ledge is that this same freedom has been extended beyond the activity front and into the cabins. At Brown Ledge, the campers live with four or five girls their age, while the counselors’ cabin sits nearby just a couple of steps down the path. By separating the staff into their own cabin, the campers get a simple and empowering message: “we trust you!” It works exceptionally well here, partly because of the clear behavioral expectations for the campers and partly due to the careful training and frequent feedback for the staff. The camper-only cabins also help the girls discover their genuine voice in a small group, without the hesitation that might be created by having a mother hen in the cabin.

The program is truly free-choice with the girls simply deciding on their day’s activities each day. There’s almost an ebb-and-flow as you walk around the camp with girls walking to an activity before deciding to move on to the next. This kind of program structure requires individual instruction to work well and Brown Ledge prides itself on close, personal instruction. Their expertise in everything from horseback riding to archery is readily apparent from an amazing annual Ski Show for waterskiers and the Brown Ledge Mounted Drill for their equestrians, as well as the quality facilities and equipment like their clay tennis courts and Anschutz rifles. Skills are clearly taught here and taught well.

The quaint, bark-siding cabins blend into this forested camp, creating an organic feel. The spirit of Brown Ledge reflects high expectations, but also reflects the happy campers and staff here. What emerges is a camper with a refreshing depth of spirit who has let go of the constant pressure of comparison that often pursues young woman today. She is confident, capable and happy.

Director's Message

Brown Ledge is often called the “Different Camp” because of its philosophy and program design. Campers are given the freedom and responsibility to decide their own program with no scheduling or need to sign-up, except for the on-horse portion of riding. Each girl may go to the activity or activities of her choice when she wishes, and stay as long as she wishes. Through this program, campers achieve much, while developing confidence and a host of life and leadership skills. Campers feel comfortable being who they are, they support each other, and they risk failure to learn new skills. We look forward to speaking with you about Brown Ledge.
