Lantern Review of Timber Lake West Camp
Timber Lake West’s founding in 1988 sets it in a small company of relatively young camps in the overnight camp universe. This relative youth, however, should not be confused with a lack of experience or even tradition. As evidence, you find that the directors have been with TLW since its inception and that the program is grown from longtime influence of the Jacobs family, the camp’s owners. Both of these facts demonstrate a real depth to the camping experience at Timber Lake West.
Innovation in camping is a source of pride here. Indeed, it is this innovation that led to its very existence, becoming the first camp in the region to move to a shorter session. Its implementation of the STARFISH program, created at partner Timber Lake Camp, also points to the value of embracing meaningful change. This has kept Timber Lake West vibrant and created an exciting program.
The structure of the program is well-designed. One goal is to expose each boy or girl to a wide-range of their nearly forty activities. The campers choose two athletic, two waterfront and two electives for each day. Most of the program is spent with their cabin and cabin counselors, traveling around camp as a tight-knit group. This helps form close relationships that are encouraged and guided by professionally trained counseling staff. The campers here are exceptionally well-supervised and constantly under the watchful, caring eyes of the staff.
The nearly 400 acres are a serene setting and the facilities are first rate. The counselors and activity specialists are the key here, though, and their ability to be impactful reflects the experience and dedication of a large, core group of caring senior leadership. This leadership sets the tone for a professional, enthusiastic and hard-working staff.
