Lantern Review of Chippewa Ranch Camp

Just a few hours north of Chicago and Milwaukee in the popular and beautiful vacation country of northern Wisconsin, Chippewa Ranch Camp is the vision of a classic girls summer camp, set under a canopy of red and white pines and along a quiet, clear and sandy bottom lake. Walking into the charming office, it’s obvious that they are proud of their camping heritage as you’re greeted by historic camp photos hanging on the walls. Longtime traditions like the Tan and White events or the Key Log campfires create a connection to their past that is both meaningful and spirited.

The camp program is balanced between the land and waterfront options, but it’s down on the lake where you can take the happy pulse of this camp. The program is a structured one with just about every hour carefully planned to keep the girls active and engaged. Whether it be the five daily activity periods that are chosen individually by each camper or the orchestrated evening programs or campfires, it’s clear that Chippewa Ranch Camp believes that engaged campers are happy ones.

A staggered weekly program helps to ensure that each camper will be able to have her choice of favorite activities; if a camper loves horseback riding or waterskiing, she won’t find it filled or unavailable. Chippewa Ranch Camp has a focus on teaching skills in each of the activities, so it follows that a camper who can pursue her interests will be more likely to develop those skills, which will help develop her self-esteem and confidence.

A wilderness camping program finds each cabin on the trail at some point during the summer. The goal is to expose all of the campers to the wonder and fun that can be discovered while on the trail. Canoe trips and sea-kayaking trips are just two examples of the wilderness program that are planned, and an option to have more time out of camp is available for those who enjoy the adventure.

The loyalty of the Chippewa Ranch girls is a direct reflection of the very personal involvement of the directors, Cliff and Lisa Lissner. Parent s and campers alike feel a connection to the larger camp community fostered through the Lissners’ openness and availability. Their dedication and passion is evident not only by the relationships they’ve developed, but by the quality of the facilities that are found at the camp, reflecting an annual investment in improvements that they know will benefit the campers.

Director's Message

It’s not just a place to whittle away the days and nights of your summer. It’s not only a cool, clean lake, wide open fields, thick forests, an old fashioned campfire, the scent of pines and the sounds of nature. It’s not just about camping. There’s more… Yes, Chippewa is a place. It’s on the map like anywhere else. But Chippewa is unique because of the magic it creates, the friendships it conjures and the sweet memories it builds. This special place encourages you to be yourself, to run and play and laugh, and to find something wonderful in everyone you meet.
